Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL)

What is NIHL?

In our day to day activities we are listening to environmental sounds such as TV, household appliances, traffic and garden maintenance equipment. Usually these sounds are at a level that wont cause damage to hearing.However, if sounds get too loud (even for a short period) they can cause harm. The inner-ear has sensitive hair cells that can be damaged if exposed to loud noise.

Types of NIHL

How do I know if I am at risk?

If you experience ringing or dullness in one or both ears after exposure to a certain sound, it is likely i was too loud. It is best to have your hearing tested and ne ee Be try to avoid returning to the same situation without  hearing protection. ne .

Preventing NIHL 

Noise induced hearing loss is the only type of hearing .loss that is preventable. If you are aware of possibly c Zamaging sounds and act appropriately, your hearing health should remain stable. Below are some examples of staying safe around loud sound. 

 Know which noises can cause damage (those at orabove 85 decibels).

o Wear earplugs or ear muffs when involved in a loud activity. Custom-made earplugs are available

o If you can't reduce the noise or protect yourself from it, move away from it.

o Protect the ears of children who are too young to protect their own.

o Make family, friends, and colleagues aware of the hazards of noise. :

o Have your hearing tested if you think you might : have hearing loss. ee _

o Headphones are safer than ear buds for listening to MUSIC.

o When using MP3 headphone you should be able to hold a conversation with someone over the volume Custom Noise Earplugs
